# Pinterest marketing for Shopify stores: from the free app to steady sales

Shopify stores get the easiest start on Pinterest: one free app sets up the catalog, the tag and the claimed site. What the app does not do is make anyone want your products. This guide covers both halves.

Updated November 5, 2026 · [Pinterest Marketing Strategies editorial team](https://pinterestmarketingstrategies.com/about/) · 10-minute read

## The short version

**What to do, in order:**

Install the free **Pinterest for Shopify app**, which claims your site, adds the tag and turns your products into Product Pins. Rewrite your best product titles in the words shoppers search. Then add **fresh pins every week** that show products in use, linked to the exact product or collection. Start **shopping ads** only for products that already earn clicks, and read the results in Conversion insights.

The app solves the technical half in an afternoon. The half that brings sales is the same as for any store: pins people want to save and click, published as part of [a seven-step Pinterest strategy](https://pinterestmarketingstrategies.com/) rather than all at once.

Everything on this page builds on the wider [Pinterest marketing for ecommerce](https://pinterestmarketingstrategies.com/pinterest-marketing-for-ecommerce/) guide, which explains catalogs, Rich Pins and the Verified Merchant Program for any platform. Here we cover what is specific to Shopify.

## Install the Pinterest app for Shopify

The [Pinterest app](https://apps.shopify.com/pinterest) is free to install from the Shopify App Store; Pinterest only charges when you buy ads. According to [Pinterest's setup page](https://help.pinterest.com/en/business/article/link-your-shopify-and-pinterest-accounts), connecting it does five things:

- Your website is claimed on Pinterest.
- The Pinterest tag and the Conversions API are installed.
- Your Shopify product feed is connected to Pinterest.
- Product Pins are generated from that feed, and the app listing says the catalog is updated automatically every day.
- Depending on your location, you become eligible for an ads credit when you launch your first campaign.

### Before you install

- **Get a [Pinterest business account](https://help.pinterest.com/en/business/article/get-a-business-account).** Pinterest lists it as the first requirement.
- **Connect from the business account itself.** Pinterest says profiles with Business Manager permissions cannot connect Shopify stores.
- **Check your country.** The app is not available everywhere, and in some countries you need one of Pinterest's advertising partners to create an ad account first.
- **Remove any old Pinterest tag.** If you pasted the tag into your theme or added it with another app, Pinterest recommends removing it before using the Pinterest app.
- **One store, one account.** A Shopify store connects to one Pinterest business account at a time.

### The steps

1. Log in to Shopify, ideally in Chrome on a desktop, as Pinterest suggests.
2. Open the Pinterest app page in the Shopify App Store and install it.
3. Follow the on-screen steps to connect your Pinterest business account.
4. Once the feed has been read, open your catalog in Pinterest and check for product errors. A broken field can stop single products or the whole feed from updating, as the [catalog rules](https://help.pinterest.com/en/business/article/before-you-get-started-with-catalogs) explain.

Pinterest also describes adding the tag by hand through your theme files, but says it does not recommend it when the app can do it for you.

## What the app leaves to you

After the app runs, every product exists on Pinterest as a Product Pin with its price and availability. That is coverage, not demand. Three things still decide whether anyone sees and clicks them:

| The app gives you | You still need |
| --- | --- |
| One Product Pin per product, using your store photo | Fresh images that show the product in use, in a room, in an outfit, aimed at searches |
| Your product title and description as they are in Shopify | Titles written in the words shoppers type into Pinterest |
| A catalog that updates itself | A weekly rhythm of new pins, and seasonal pins published before the season |
| The tag and Conversions API | A monthly look at which products and pins actually sell |

Pinterest's [distribution guidance](https://help.pinterest.com/en/business/article/pin-performance-and-distribution) asks for fresh content regularly and warns against duplicate pins, so the catalog alone is a starting point. Most stores that do well on Pinterest pair it with a steady flow of new pins for their best sellers and collections.

## Shopify products that work as pins

The catalog takes each product's name, description, link, main image, price and availability from your store, so what you write in Shopify is what Pinterest shows. Small edits in the Shopify admin pay off on both sites.

- **Titles that describe.** Pinterest asks for the same name as on the product page, including variant details such as colour and size. "Oak Floating Shelf, 60 cm, Natural" is searchable; "The Nordic" is not.
- **Descriptions that answer the search.** Put the material, use and style in the first sentence, the way a shopper would describe what they want.
- **A tall main image.** Pinterest's catalog spec asks for a main product image of at least 1000 by 1500 pixels, a 2:3 shape. Add lifestyle shots as extra images; Pinterest can use up to 10 additional images per product.
- **Accurate stock and prices.** Pinterest's catalog rules ask for a price that reflects the true cost and a link that leads to the same product, showing the same data.

Your Shopify blog matters too. Gift guides, styling ideas and how-to posts make good pins for people who are not yet searching for a product, and each post can link to the products it features. Shopify builds a [sitemap](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/seo/find-site-map) for every store, listing products, collections and blog posts and updating as you add them, which is what pin tools read to find new pages.

## Boards and collections

Your Shopify collections are a good first draft of your Pinterest boards, with one change: name each board after the search, not the collection. "Spring Drop 24" becomes "Spring Table Decor"; "The Linen Edit" becomes "Linen Bedding Ideas". Add boards for occasions your products fit, such as housewarming gifts or wedding registry ideas, and pin the same product to the board each new image suits. Our [board strategy](https://pinterestmarketingstrategies.com/pinterest-board-strategy/) covers how many boards to start with and when to use sections.

In the catalog, products are organised into product groups for shopping ads. Groups that mirror your collections make ads easier to manage later.

## Ads from your Shopify catalog

With the catalog connected, you can run [shopping ads](https://help.pinterest.com/en/business/article/shopping-ads): standard, video, carousel and personalized collections formats, all built from product groups under the Sales objective. The app listing also mentions buying shoppable ads, and you may get the first-campaign credit mentioned above.

Spend follows proof. Let organic pins run for a few weeks, find the products whose pins earn outbound clicks, and promote those first. Our guide to [budgets, bids and objectives for Pinterest ads](https://pinterestmarketingstrategies.com/pinterest-ads-strategy/) covers how to judge the results.

## Tracking Pinterest sales on Shopify

Because the app installs the tag and the Conversions API, Pinterest can see page visits, add-to-cart and checkouts from people who saw or clicked your pins.

- **[Conversion insights](https://help.pinterest.com/en/business/article/conversion-insights)** in Pinterest shows organic and paid results together. By default it counts conversions within 1 day of a view or 30 days of a click.
- **Shopify's own reports** show orders by source. Add utm_source=pinterest to the links on your own pins so they are labelled consistently.
- **[Pinterest Analytics](https://help.pinterest.com/en/business/article/pinterest-analytics)** shows which pins earn outbound clicks, the leading sign of which products to pin more.

Pinterest's and Shopify's numbers will rarely match exactly, because they credit sales in different ways. Pick one as your monthly KPI and stick with it; our guide to [Pinterest KPIs](https://pinterestmarketingstrategies.com/pinterest-kpis/) explains how to set a target without benchmarks.

## Tools for Shopify stores, ranked

The Pinterest app is the foundation and it is free, so it is not ranked here. The tools below handle the part it leaves to you, fresh pins. They are ranked on the five weighted criteria from our [comparison of Pinterest marketing tools](https://pinterestmarketingstrategies.com/best-pinterest-marketing-tools/), with prices as each vendor listed them on November 5, 2026.

| Rank | Tool | For a Shopify store | Price from |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **1** | [SiteToSocial](https://www.sitetosocial.com/) | Reads your store's sitemap, so every product and blog post gets pins; picks searches from Pinterest data, designs pins from your photos and posts daily | [$10 per website a month](https://www.sitetosocial.com/#pricing), $9 billed yearly |
| **2** | [Tailwind](https://www.tailwindapp.com/) | Scheduling, pin creation and keyword tools; syncs content from Shopify | [$17.99 a month](https://www.tailwindapp.com/pricing) billed yearly |
| **3** | [Pin Generator](https://pingenerator.com/) | Syncs Shopify products to generate pins and can build Pinterest catalogs | [$23.99 a month](https://pingenerator.com/pricing) on offer |

**What makes SiteToSocial our #1 on Shopify:**

It is the natural partner to the Pinterest app. The app puts your catalog on Pinterest; [SiteToSocial](https://www.sitetosocial.com/) keeps adding the fresh, search-led pins the catalog cannot. Add your store's sitemap and every product page and blog post gets pins, including products that never had one, and new products are picked up when you re-scan. Each pin targets a phrase picked by how often people search it, using Pinterest's own ads data, is designed from the photos on the product page, and is filed on a board named after that search; publishing runs through the official Pinterest API at up to 15 pins daily. Its free [Rich Pins validator](https://www.sitetosocial.com/pinterest-rich-pins-validator) checks Shopify product pages for the price data Pinterest needs. Pricing is $10 per website a month after a 14-day free trial that needs no card.

Tailwind is the better fit if you want to approve and schedule every pin yourself. Pin Generator suits stores that want one tool to sync products and build the catalog, though the free Pinterest app already covers the catalog on Shopify.

## Questions people ask

### Does Shopify integrate with Pinterest?

Yes. The Pinterest for Shopify app connects your store to a Pinterest business account. Pinterest says it claims your website, installs the Pinterest tag and Conversions API, connects your product feed and generates Product Pins from it. It is not available in every country.

### Is the Pinterest app for Shopify free?

Yes. The Shopify App Store lists it as free to install, and Pinterest charges only when you buy ads. Depending on your location, you may also be eligible for an ads credit when you launch your first campaign.

### Do I need to claim my Shopify store on Pinterest?

Not separately if you use the app: connecting through the Pinterest for Shopify app claims your website for you. If you connect another way, claim the domain your store runs on.

### Can I connect two Shopify stores to one Pinterest account?

Not at the same time: each store links to a single Pinterest business account. Pinterest asks merchants with two Shopify stores to contact it.

### How do I add the Pinterest tag to Shopify?

Let the Pinterest app add it. Pinterest describes the manual method through your theme files but does not recommend it, and if you added the tag by hand or through another app, it recommends removing that tag before using the Pinterest app.

### How many pins should a Shopify store post?

Enough to stay fresh every week without repeating yourself. Pinterest favours fresh content and warns against duplicates, so a few new images of your best products each week, plus seasonal ideas, beats re-pinning the same catalog photos.
